Biography of Theresa Rebeck


Theresa Rebeck’s recent theater projects include The Water’s Edge, produced this summer at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, as part of their 50th anniversary season. Omnium Gatherum (co-written with Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros, and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize) was featured at the Humana Festival 2003, and had a commercial run at the Variety Arts. Past productions include Bad Dates and The Butterfly Collection at Playwrights Horizons, Spike Heels, Loose Knit and The Family of Mann at Second Stage; View of the Dome at New York Theatre Workshop and Victory Gardens, Sunday on the Rocks and Abstract Expression at the Long Wharf. Her work has been widely produced both regionally and internationally.

In television, Ms. Rebeck has written for the HBO series Dream On, Brooklyn Bridge, L.A. Law, Maximum Bob, First Wave, Third Watch, and NYPD Blue, where she also worked as a producer. This spring she wrote and executive produced a television pilot for Warner Bros/CBS, The Webster Report, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starring Stanley Tucci. In film, she has written the screenplay for Kalamazoo, an independent short starring Wallace Shawn and Adrienne Shelley. Other produced features include Harriet the Spy, Gossip and the independent feature Sunday on the Rocks.

Awards include the Mystery Writer’s of America’s Edgar Award, the Writer’s Guild of America award for Episodic Drama, the Hispanic Images Imagen Award, and the Peabody, all for her work on NYPD Blue. She has been a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize twice, won the National Theatre Conference Award (for The Family of Mann), and was awarded the William Inge New Voices Playwriting Award in 2003. Ms. Rebeck is a member of Naked Angels, was the Lark Writer-in-Residence 2002-2004, and was recently elected to serve on the Dramatists Guild Council.

Ms. Rebeck holds a PhD. from Brandeis University in Victorian Melodrama. She and her husband Jess Lynn have two children, Cooper and Cleo.
