THE ODYSSEY EXPERIENCE

Written and directed by Christopher Parks
Created by: Christopher Parks, James Murtha and Lorna Howley

VIEW AUDIENCE GUIDE

The greatest epic of western literature, Odysseus’s voyage is the subject of an innovative participatory style of children’s theater being developed by McCarter’s Education Department. The only scenery is the imagination of the audience, as they, together with an ensemble of professional actors, create every facet of the theatrical experience. Students not only interact with characters in this tale from ancient Greece, but they also play characters such as Penelope, Hermes, Poseidon, the sailors of Odysseus and many others, as they go on a journey unlike any they have ever experienced before.

If you’re in the room, you’re in the show!

One of the greatest legends of West African Mandé tradition is brought to life in a completely-interactive McCarter-created experiential theater production.  The epic of Sunjata is the saga of a boy who is prophesied to be the greatest king of his people, and his loving mother, who must help him to first overcome the adversity of a very dangerous world of sorcery and antagonism.  In the spirit of McCarter Education's lauded production of The Odyssey Experience, when audience members come to the play they quickly realize that they are not there to watch the production, but they are there to be in it, taking on various roles, and helping to create the magical world of 12th century Mali through singing, dancing, and performing.
