Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became an iconic rock ‘n’ roll queen. Her unmistakable voice, laced with raw emotion and Southern Comfort, made her the must-see “rock mama” from Monterey to Woodstock. Fueled by a live band and psychedelic performances of her unforgettable songs like “Piece of my Heart,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” and “Cry Baby,” A Night with Janis Joplin is a powerful dramatic celebration of Janis, and her inspirations—including Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Nina Simone, and Bessie Smith. When small town Irishmen Charlie and Jake are hired as extras in an epic American movie that invades their scenic County Kerry village, chaos ensues as they begin to discover that their romanticized Hollywood dream isn’t quite what it seems. Marie Jones’ Olivier Award-winning comedy is a rollicking, poignant tale brought to life by two actors portraying a colorful cast of dozens. Acclaimed British director Lindsay Posner helms this hilarious story that pits harsh reality against Hollywood endings. (Berlind)

When a tough Brooklyn teenager is sent to live with her grandmother in South Carolina, she finds herself on a powerful journey toward discovering her place in this world and in her own culture. Adapted from the best-selling book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry, Crowns weaves faith and fashion together—with a generous dose of “hattitude”—into an inspirational coming-of-age musical celebration of African American women and their church hats. (Matthews)

May 4-June 3, 2018

From the Tony Award-winning playwright who brought us the smash Broadway hit Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Christopher Durang returns to McCarter with his newest play and latest cast of eccentric characters. Turning Off the Morning News is a black comedy about two sets of neighbors. Cliff and Salena have just moved in; the family across the street is at best peculiar, and at worst, stark raving mad!  Should the new neighbors ignore their bizarre behavior, or invite them to dinner?
