2017-18 Music Series
BACH'S BRANDENBURGS
December 18, 2017

This Princeton holiday tradition brings together 20-plus resident members of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center—an all-star lineup performing one of music’s most enduring masterpieces all in one evening. (Richardson)

NIKOLAJ ZNAIDER, violin
Robert Kulik, piano

January 29, 2018

As a violin virtuoso, Nikolaj Znaider has simultaneously established a relationship with orchestras he not only plays with but regularly conducts, like the London Symphony with whom he is recording all the Mozart violin concertos. As a recitalist, he has both the sweetness of a Fritz Kreisler, the muscularity of a Francescatti, and his own wisdom for setting off the poetic against the prosaic. (Matthews)

DANIIL TRIFONOV, piano
MATTHIAS GOERNE, baritone

February 4, 2018

Here’s the duo of the season—the hottest pianist on the planet joining forces with the baritone of the moment. After winning both the Tchaikovsky and the Arthur Rubinstein competitions in 2012, Daniil Trifonov has steadily climbed every musical Everest in his path. Next season, he will be Carnegie Hall’s “Artist in Residence,” curating seven different programs. Matthias Goerne continues to conquer opera stages the world over, and his resume covers every major role in the repertoire. (Matthews)

NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OF CUBA
March 25, 2018

Founded in 1960, the Orquestra Sinfonica Nacional de Cuba’s mission has been to introduce Cuban and Latin American music to the rest of the world, and its tours have taken it everywhere—including to the USA for the first time in 2012. The piano soloist at McCarter is Yekwon Sunwoo, the gold medalist of the 2017 Van Cliburn Competition. (Richardson)

SIR JAMES GALWAY, flute
& Lady Jeanne Galway, flute
Phillip Moll, piano

March 26, 2018

Globally renowned as the supreme interpreter of the classical flute repertoire, Sir James Galway is a consummate performer whose appeal transcends all musical boundaries. With over 30 million recordings sold worldwide, Galway has been a household name for decades. The diversity of Galway’s repertoire reflects his impressive musical range, and has served to establish him as an artist of the very highest stature. (Matthews)

SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE
April 9, 2018

Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble’s members—musicians, storytellers, and visual artists—hail from more than 20 countries along the routes of the ancient Silk Road. Their voices and instruments (kamancheh, gaita, shakuhachi, pipa, sheng, and bawu, to name a few) all support Yo-Yo Ma’s goal: to maintain the integrity of art rooted in authentic traditions while nourishing global connections. (Matthews)

YUNDI, piano
April 25, 2018

Yundi has become one of the pioneers of classical music in China. He imprints the music he plays with a personal esthetic reminiscent of Horowitz and Rubinstein. For Yundi’s McCarter performance—his only North American recital of the season—he will perform an all-Chopin program, including the Four Ballades and the 24 Preludes, Op. 28. (Matthews)

JEREMY DENK, piano
May 1, 2018

Jeremy Denk, recipient of both a MacArthur “Genius Grant” and Avery Fisher Prize, has carved out his own unique place as a recitalist, focusing on a thought-provoking repertoire. His recital will include Beethoven’s Sonata No. 30 Op. 109 and the Schumann Fantasy, as well as Prokofiev’s rarely heard Visions Fugitives. (Matthews)
