Matthews Theatre

The magnificent 1100 seat Matthews Theatre, located in the main building, was recently renovated thanks to the generosity of Princeton University.  The new handcrafted imported lighting fixtures, rich velvet covered seats, new carpeting, and a welcoming color scheme, maintain the original dignity and charm of the 75 year old house.  The auditorium, which includes Premium Orchestra, Front and Rear Orchestra, Front and Rear Balcony, and Box/Grand Tier sections, has superb acoustics and sightlines from any seat and boasts state-of-the-art computerized sound and lighting systems.

This dynamic new contemporary 373-seat performance space, which opened for McCarter’s 2003-2004 season, was designed by award-winning architect Hugh Hardy. The auditorium features stepped stadium seating that allows excellent visibility of the stage from all seats for an intimate and unique theatrical experience. Rows are lettered A through R, so every location is equivalent to sitting in the front orchestra in the Matthews theater, and are numbered in the same way as the Matthews. There are 4 entrances on two levels and two center aisles with handrails to ease the flow of patrons locating their seats.
