Behind the Build
Photos from our scene and costume shops showcasing the work of McCarter’s production department.
This past July, members of the A Christmas Carol cast and design team gathered in Princeton for a script and music workshop. During this time, they explored some aspects of the new staging, experimented with sound and music ideas (with composer Michael Friedman and sound designer Darron L West), and enjoyed a picnic with members of the Community Ensemble.
“When I’m directing a complex show, I put together what I call a storyboard, which is a set of images of each scene of the play, which I use to think ahead and get prepared. On A Christmas Carol it’s been much more than that. Between special effects, music, lighting, scenes that shift, objects that move onstage, and things that fly, there are simply so many moving pieces that the storyboards become a part of how [the production team and I] get on the same page. It has been vital in helping me map out what all of our options are, and in communicating them to everyone. Each major shift has its own slide, along with a line it corresponds to in the play, or a notation about what’s happening.”
