I’m not sure the decision to contemporize this worked. The only production I saw was the Central Park one years ago with Streep, Portman, Kline, etc., and that had zip and polish, this one was more lugubrious, and instead of having the grandeur of the original it veered more precariously towards an episode of The O.C. I thought a few of the actors were terrific (don’t have their names right in front of me so I’ll have to refer to them by character)–Milly, Nina (more so in the first three acts, when she was as shiny as a newly-minted penny, less so in the fourth act), and Uncle Nick. Less impressed with the actor who played Trigorin (sorry, Philip). He wasn’t nearly as charismatic as necessary to embody the role, and Alex, but that’s an almost impossible role to play without coming off like a spoiled brat. I do know that Larry Pine played the doctor in both versions, and he is always good.
