Non-traditional casting

Posted by Adam Immerwahr on August 20th, 2007

As you may know, Edward Albee’s newest play, Me, Myself & I, deals with identical twin brothers named OTTO and otto (I swear that I’m not making this up). So right now, Mara, Laura, Emily and Edward Albee are flying out to Los Angeles, where they will be auditioning sets of identical twins.

Meanwhile, the Tartuffe dog-hunt is still going strong.

This reminds me of other kinds of non-traditional casting we’ve done at McCarter since I’ve been an employee. The children that we cast every year in A Christmas Carol are part of an enormous set of auditions that brings in many members of our community (for roughly 13 roles). It also reminds me of trying to cast the acrobatic, aerialist fairies in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (I called them “fairy-alists”). At those auditions, not only did the actors have to act and sing, but they also had to demonstrate their physical and acrobatic abilities (in one test, they had to hold themselves against a wall, upside down). It was impressive. I felt very out-of-shape.

And last year’s production of Translations was a beast, because McCarter’s staff had to not only get visas for the Irish actors to work in this country (a massive task, since 9/11), but the actors’ union, Actors Equity, also had to approve their employment (in exchange for which an equal number of American actors will be working in Ireland soon!).

Anyway, with the help of Marisol, one of our rock-star directing/producing interns, the dog hunt continues. If you’ve got any leads (get it?), shoot me an e-mail!
