The Literary Office–New Location, Same Bustling Hive of Activity
Posted by Elizabeth Edwards on August 21st, 2007

New Literary office

So, we’ve moved out of Narnia. Which is what I had taken to calling the former literary office, since you had to walk through the coat closet to get there. Now we’re on the main hallway, which is much more sociable and even allows us oblique glimpses of natural light—a very rare and exciting commodity in the theater, I have found. (Carrie likes to point out to all our visitors—with an air of distinct pride—that even McCarter’s rehearsal room features a window.)

So far we’ve only had a chance to get half-moved-in to our new space, amidst what seems to be the constant river of projects that flow across our desks here in literary. The diversity of the tasks I get to work on keeps life interesting, and any time one project has me almost overwhelmed I can always take a break and try something completely different.

Non-traditional casting
Posted by Adam Immerwahr on August 20th, 2007

As you may know, Edward Albee’s newest play, Me, Myself & I, deals with identical twin brothers named OTTO and otto (I swear that I’m not making this up). So right now, Mara, Laura, Emily and Edward Albee are flying out to Los Angeles, where they will be auditioning sets of identical twins.

Meanwhile, the Tartuffe dog-hunt is still going strong.

Company Dinner
Posted by Adam Immerwahr on August 17th, 2007

Last night was the “Company Dinner” for the Stick Fly cast. McCarter’s artistic staff does this for every show - the entire cast is invited over to either Emily or Mara’s house for a relaxed evening and a yummy dinner. It is a chance for them to unwind, relax, and get to know us and each other in a non-rehearsal setting. It was great fun.

Shirley Jo Interview, Part 1
Posted by Adam Immerwahr on August 15th, 2007

So you all remember when McCarter Literary Intern Elizabeth Edwards said she did a neat interview with Shirley Jo Finney (director of Stick Fly)? Well, she did. It’s super-long, so I’m splitting it into two posts. So read on for the first half of the interview!

Lydia Diamond Speaks
Posted by Adam Immerwahr on August 15th, 2007

Lydia Diamond

So I conducted my interview with Lydia Diamond this weekend at the Carousel Diner in Princeton. Yum. I had a mushroom omelet with swiss cheese. I recorded the interview with my computer, and the edited transcript will appear in the online resource guide (coming soon, I promise). If you want the audio version, you can listen to it here.

I don’t know if the technology of this will work, but you should be able to right click “save file as” or something and download this to your computer. So, um, you can put it on your iPod or something.
Just think - you could listen to Lydia Diamond while jogging. (more…)

The First Two Weeks; or A Day in the Life of An Artistic Intern
Posted by Elizabeth Edwards on August 13th, 2007

It’s hard to believe, given everything that has happened since I got here, that it has only been two weeks since I started my internship at McCarter. And technically, since I didn’t actually start working until August 1st, it’s only been a week and a half. Which is crazy.

A new vocabulary
Posted by Adam Immerwahr on August 13th, 2007

The first weekend of Stick Fly rehearsal has just finished. I was in for most of the day yesterday (I stepped out for a few hours when the actors did another read-through of the entire play), and wow, there are some cool things going on. (more…)

Beginnings and Endings
Posted by Adam Immerwahr on August 10th, 2007

So everyone is here. The actors arrived at the theater this morning and are inside the rehearsal hall conducting equity business. Actors’ Equity is the union of actors and stage managers, and they gotta do private union stuff at the beginning of every rehearsal hall. Voting on rehearsal hours, breaks, etc. Everyone else is gathering outside the hall, milling about, shaking hands, and waiting to come in for the “meet and greet.” (more…)

And soooo it begins
Posted by Shirley Jo Finney on August 9th, 2007

Wow!

I AM HERE, W0W!!

I arrived yesterday, not knowing that the world around me was unraveling. New York was hit by a tornado, subways were flooded and people again had to adapt to Mother nature and her changes.

Princeton was HOT. (more…)
