The Secret: Something kept hidden or unexplained as in a mystery: something kept from the knowledge of others or shared only confidentially with a few: something taken to be key to a desired end

Ambassador: A diplomatic official of the highest rank

Archetypes: An original model or type after which other similar things are patterned; prototype; in the Jungian sense, the images and figures that make up the “collective unconscious,” the unconscious common to all humans

Aster flowers: Flowers that have rayed, daisy-like petals, ranging in color from white to blue, purple, or pink

Battle-name: A title as opposed to a personal name; normally used during times of fighting

Freud, Sigmund: (b. 1856, d. 1939) Austrian neurologist; founder of the psychoanalysis school of psychology, who studied dreams and fairy tales as a window into the unconscious

Gloom: Partial or total darkness; dimness; an atmosphere of melancholy or depression

Jung, Carl Gustav: (b. 1875, d. 1961) Swiss psychiatrist; at one point Freud’s heir-apparent in psychoanalysis but the two parted ways; he used archetypes, found throughout fairy tales, to explore his theory of the “collective unconscious,” an unconscious common to all humans

Lark: A bird known for its sustained, melodious song.

Liver and Lamington’s: Chocolate-covered cubes of stale sponge cake served with liver, the internal organ of a cow or pig

Muses: Guiding spirits; sources of inspiration

Nursemaid: A woman employed to take care of children

Ogre: Fabled man-eating giant or monster; one who is particularly cruel, brutish, or hideous

Pâté: A paste made from goose liver

Tilapia a la Tiepolo: a dish made from a freshwater white fish native to Africa and the Middle East
