He’s back! The native Hawaiian who has singlehandedly transformed the four-stringed ukulele into an instrument of incredible virtuosity, Jake Shimabukuro plays everything: rock, jazz, pop tunes, American songbook standards, and his own lilting originals, with influences ranging from Hendrix to Bach. His latest CD, Grand Ukulele, released in October 2012 which premeried at #1 on Billboard World Music chart. Sharing this “sonic breakout” evening is Time for Three (Tf3) aka “America’s Classical Garage Band.” This charismatic string trio transcends traditional classification, weaving elements of classical, country, western, gypsy, and jazz idioms into their own unique blend—everything from Kanye West to the Orange Blossom Special. While studying at the Curtis Institute, the three Philadelphia natives—violinists Zach De Pue and Nick Kendall, and double bassist Ranaan Meyer—discovered that improvising, composing, and arranging was a lot more fun than playing with an orchestra. And when you hear them, you’ll agree.
