Bruce Cockburn is the closest thing Canada has to another Bruce (Springsteen)—that nation’s premier singer/songwriter, a virtual Canadian institution for 40 years who has won every award in sight multiple times, including thirteen JUNO Awards (31 nominations). And like his American namesake, Cockburn distills political events, spiritual discovery, humanitarian concerns, and personal experience into rich and compelling songs—31 CDs to date, including his latest, Small Source of Comfort (2011). But to know him best is to know his songs, and you do: If I Had a Rocket Launcher, Wondering Where the Lions Are, Lovers in a Dangerous Time, Pacing the Cage, If a Tree Falls , The Coldest Night of the Year—and hundreds more, which have been covered by everyone from Jerry Garcia to Jimmy Buffett. Small wonder that Cockburn was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2001 and is also an Officer of the Order of Canada (which, in Canada, is like being knighted!).
