Education at McCarter

Due to COVID, all education classes have shifted to virtual for the time being. We will make a determination about when we can return to in-person classes as we learn more information.

Two Ways to Enjoy

In-Person Classes

McCarter offers an array of in-person and online classes for PreK-12th grade students and adults. Each class fosters a supportive and creative environment where every student is free to explore, play, and develop their unique artistic voice.

Whether you have years of experience or you're trying theater for the first time, McCarter's classes offer a meaningful and joyful learning experience for students of all ages.

McCarter Online Classes

Whether you're a playwrightactorimproviserenthusiast, or just starting to explore theater, we have something for you.

These classes have a limited capacity and are open to digital audiences across the globe, so register today to reserve your spot!

While we were thrilled for their success, we are currently taking a break from programing online classes. We are excited to welcome new in-person education offerings throughout the year.

Student Matinees

Stay tuned for information about our student matinees this season.

McCarter offers student matinees for most of our mainstage theatre series. Productions are generally appropriate for grades 9th-12th, but we occasionally extend the opportunity to our middle school audience based on the show's content. A complimentary digital resource guide with companion activities is included for each school with the price of admission. To learn more about our current offerings, click here.

In-School Residency

McCarter offers a series of residencies and workshops that are custom designed to suit the interest and needs of each participating school. Past residencies have included but are not limited to playwriting, Shakespeare, production and technical theatre, dramaturgy, acting and performance. We also offer pre and post-show workshops in connection with our student matinee series. To learn more about how you can design a residency for your school, email
