Any Given Child Trenton

McCarter is a central partner in the ongoing initiative in Trenton, Ensuring the Arts for Any Given Child. In 2015, McCarter helped the district apply to be chosen by the John F. Kennedy Center as the 20th site for this program, which uses a collective impact model to create and implement a plan for arts access and equity in public schools. In 2016, and a Community Arts Team (CAT) made up of 35 people from the school district, local arts organizations, the business community, and the philanthropic community worked with Kennedy Center facilitators to gather data, set priorities, and create a strategic plan.

The main areas of focus for Any Given Child Trenton are:

  • Developing school, teacher, and partner capacity to implement arts integration teaching practices
  • Ensuring a sequenced and equitable arts curriculum for all children in Pre-K through 12th grade.
  • Increasing the number, efficacy, and equitable distribution of partnerships between Trenton Public Schools and local arts organizations
  • Increasing community awareness of arts initiatives and the value of arts in Trenton schools

McCarter’s Trenton-based in-school programs are designed to align with and support this important multi-sector initiative. We serve about 400 individual students from grades 2-12 with over 3,200 impact hours of programming (direct contact with professional teaching artists). Another 300-500 Trenton high school students attend our student matinees each year at no-cost. McCarter is able to subsidize the tickets and transportation costs thanks to the generous support of our donors. In addition, we offer fully-subsidized professional development on arts to Trenton teachers, who can earn professional development credit by participating. We have ongoing partnerships with Washington Elementary, Hedgepeth/Williams Middle School, Joyce Kilmer Middle School, Rivera Community Middle School, Trenton Central High School, and Trenton West High School.

McCarter staff sit on the executive, programming, and partnerships committees of the Community Arts Team and have represented Any Given Child Trenton at national convenings and conferences. In 2017, McCarter was honored by the Trenton Public Education foundation for our commitment to this initiative.
