McCarter Welomes NJ Secretary Of State During ArtPride NJ’s Support The Arts & Vote Initiative

On Thursday, October 11, New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way and New Jersey State Council on the Arts Interim Director Allison Tratner visited McCarter Theatre Center for a pre-show tour of the Matthews stage and discussion with McCarter staff.

This special visit was timed in conjunction with McCarter’s support of ArtPride NJ’s voter registration program: “Support the Arts & Vote!” One particular voter registrant during the campaign was McCarter’s own Managing Director Michael S. Rosenberg, who recently returned to New Jersey after nine years at the helm of California’s La Jolla Playhouse.

From October 9 through 14, patrons attending McCarter’s current production of Dominique Morisseau’s Detroit ’67 had an opportunity to register to vote or change addresses ahead of New Jersey’s October 16 voter registration deadline. Patrons engaged with McCarter volunteers on a variety of issues relevant to McCarter Theatre Center and ArtPride NJ, including the ongoing need for supported statewide artistic programs created to drive economic growth, promoting community engagement, and improving the quality of life for millions of residents in the Garden State.

Regarding the ArtPride NJ voter initiative, Secretary Way remarked: “Much like the arts give people a platform to share their stories, voting gives people the opportunity to make their voices heard. Now more than ever, communities across our nation are feeling empowered by the right to vote. A record number of people—800,000—registered to vote on National Voter Registration Day last month.

We are grateful to our state’s strong arts sector—and organizations like the NJ State Council on the Arts, ArtPride New Jersey and McCarter Theatre—for recognizing the role of the arts in bringing communities together and seeing the potential arts organizations have to increase, and celebrate civic engagement.”
