And his Indo-Pak Coalition
March 16, 2018
Venue Berlind Theatre
Meet a new force in the local jazz scene, the alto-saxophonist/composer Rudresh Mahanthappa, recently appointed the Director of Jazz at Princeton University. Few musicians share his ability to combine the expansive possibilities of his music with his culture, hybridizing progressive jazz with South Indian classical music. Since he first played the Berlind as an original member of Vijay Iyer’s quartet, he has won a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, and been named Alto Saxophonist of the Year five years running by Downbeat Magazine—which also named his 2015 CD Bird Calls the number one album of the year. He comes to McCarter with his latest project, his Indo-Pak Coalition, in which he is joined by Pakistani-American guitarist Rez Abbasi and innovative percussionist Dan Weiss.
Join us for a post-performance talkback with the artists and McCarter’s Programming Director Bill Lockwood.
