Pianists who take the concert world by storm don’t come along that often. Igor Levit, whose breakthrough Carnegie Hall recital last season “reached thrilling heights” (The New York Times) is one of those pianists. Levit describes himself as “Citizen/European/Pianist,” and his career represents a mixture of powerful art and musical candor. This past year at the age of 31, he was awarded the Gilmore Award, which is awarded every four years to an artist destined to make a mark on music. His latest CD, Life, a meditation on how music continues beyond itself, was on every critic’s “Best of” list. His McCarter program will be an all-Beethoven bonanza featuring the monumental Hammerklavier: Sonatas Nos. 9 ,10, 11 and 29.
