The St. Matthew Passion has reigned unchallenged as the supreme achievement of all vocal literature since its premiere at Leipzig’s St Thomas Church in 1727. The work’s physical demands alone—requiring both orchestra and soloists plus a double-chorus—explain why it is rarely performed.  Bach depicts Christ’s Passion as a musical dialogue with a directness that allows us to feel the extreme emotions triggered by the events described. Performed with subtitles.
