VENUE Matthews Theater
This is music in which the line between artistry and bravado is as thin as an uncooked pappadam. It shrank even further with displays of percussive virtuosity being the concert’s raison d’etre.

A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, Zakir Hussain is a national treasure in his home country of India, a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement. A consistently brilliant and exciting performer, Hussain has become one of India’s reigning cultural ambassadors, working with the likes of George Harrison, YoYo Ma, Van Morrison, Pharoah Sanders, and many, many more. Here, he performs with eight-generation sarangi master Sabir Khan, who draws from both the hypnotic loops of Sufi music and the rhythms of Indian classical dance, and Debopriya Chatterjee, the Indian Hindustani bansuri player trained in both Indian and Western classical music, and best known for being one of the illustrious “Flute Sisters” with her sibling Suchismita.
