After the encore premiere of Bulrusher on June 3, Eisa Davis (playwright and director), Paula Vogel (Bard at the Gate founder and co-curator), and Valerie Curtis-Newton (Artistic Director for The Hansberry Project) joined together in a live conversation moderated by Nicole A. Watson (McCarter's Associate Artistic Director and Bard at the Gate co-curator) to discuss their experience with the play and take live questions from the audience.
About The Play
In 1955, in the redwood country north of San Francisco, a multiracial girl grows up in a predominantly white town whose residents pepper their speech with the historical dialect of Boontling. Found floating in a basket on the river as an infant, Bulrusher is an orphan with a gift for clairvoyance that makes her feel like a stranger even amongst the strange: the taciturn schoolteacher who adopted her, the madam who runs her brothel with a fierce discipline, the logger with a zest for horses and women, and the guitar-slinging boy who is after Bulrusher's heart. Just when she thought her world might close in on her, she discovers an entirely new sense of self when a black girl from Alabama comes to town.
About Bard at the Gate
Bard at the Gate, founded by Paula Vogel and co-curated by Paula Vogel and Nicole A. Watson, directly responds to the lack of representation of diverse voices within the American theatrical canon. This uniquely curated virtual reading series is designed to become a widely accessible platform for powerful, overlooked plays by BIPOC, women, LGBTQ, and disabled artists.
