Venue Outside on the lawn in front of the Matthews Theatre
Duration 85 minutes

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date…"
(The start of Sonnet #18)
Love Shakespeare? Savor the sonnets? McCarter is hosting an in-person “Sonnet Slam” — a favorite Shakespeare Community Reading Group offering — for all ages and experience levels. This is a fun and informal way to personally experience Shakespeare’s gift to poetic posterity. All are welcome as readers or listeners. No previous experience with Shakespeare or the Sonnets is necessary!
Let’s celebrate in poetic fashion the end of summer and its "lease," as well as the start of a new McCarter Theatre Center performance season, shall we? This is an in-person, outdoor event. B.Y.O.C. (Bring Your Own Chair) For those unable to attend in person, we will provide information on how to access the live event for at-home viewing.
Those wishing to participate as in-person Readers, will be randomly assigned a sonnet to read. Reading order is determined by order of registration, i.e., first to register, first to read.
All are invited, but registration is required. Please be sure to read all the information detailed in the online form. To be considered as a Reader, you must register no later than Sunday, August 28.
In the event of rain, this event will be moved to an entirely virtual platform.
Don’t have a copy of the sonnets at home? Here is just one place to find them for free online.
