Happenings & Highlights

their town. OUR town. Putting artists of color at the center of a classic

Following the news of a 2021 Broadway revival of Our Town, actor Olivia Oguma (Mamma Mia!, Les Misérables) was hurt and frustrated at not seeing herself represented on stage in the context of plays that explore what it means to be an American. She set about putting her own twist on the Thornton Wilder classic. With a roster of well-known industry talent, she created an original short film using one of Wilder's monologues to put BIPOC artists front and center.

The Artist Speaks: Amythyst Kiah

Accompanied interchangeably with banjo, acoustic guitar, or a full band, Amythyst Kiah's eclectic influences span decades and she finds inspiration in old time music, alternative rock, folk, country, and blues. Our Native Daughters is her most recent collaboration with Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla, and Allison Russell. We caught up with Amythyst to see how she was keeping busy in quarantine.

Black Theatre United: Taking Action

Black Theatre United's inaugural event featured six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald and President of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund Sherrilyn Ifill in the virtual town hall, “Activating Black Artists and Allies for Racial Justice.” McDonald is one of BTU's founding members, along with Brian Stokes Mitchell, Billy Porter, Vanessa Williams and more. The organization formed in June to inspire reform across the arts and to combat industry-wide systemic racism.
