The St. Matthew Passion has reigned as the supreme achievement of vocal literature since its premiere at Leipzig’s St Thomas Church in 1727, featuring orchestra, soloists, plus a double-chorus. Bach depicts Christ’s Passion as a musical dialogue with a directness that allows us to feel the extreme emotions triggered by the events described. Performed with subtitles.
