Across a career spanning more than two decades, Mariza has embraced that legacy and transformed it into a universal language, honoring the emotional depth of fado while bringing its timeless artistry to audiences around the world. Her unmistakable voice has earned her more than 50 platinum records, multiple GRAMMY nominations, and numerous international honors. Since her breakthrough album, Fado em Mim (2001), she has sold more than one million recordings and collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists including Sting, Cesária Évora, and Gilberto Gil.
More than a performer, Mariza is a cultural ambassador whose music carries the soul of Portugal across cultures and generations.
Born in Mozambique and raised in Mouraria, the historic Lisbon neighborhood at the center of fado’s rich cultural heritage, Mariza grew up immersed in the voices, guitars, and traditions of this soulful Portuguese art form. Portugal’s national musical tradition, fado is a deeply expressive music of longing, characterized by warm guitar melodies and evocative lyrics.

I’m excited to introduce you to Mariza, one of the great voices of contemporary fado.
She has taken this soulful Portuguese tradition from the streets of Lisbon to concert halls around the world. Her voice is unmistakable, and when she takes the stage, she has a presence that is every bit as captivating. She honors the roots of fado while continuing to push the music forward, making it entirely her own.
And now, for the first time, she is coming to McCarter.
You may already know her. You may know and love fado. Or perhaps this will be your first experience with both. Either way, I know you’re in for a real treat.
One of the things I love about McCarter is that we bring extraordinary artists from around the world to Princeton and give you the opportunity to experience their talent without having to pack your suitcase.
