Born in Mozambique and raised in Mouraria, the historic Lisbon neighborhood at the center of fado’s rich cultural heritage, Mariza grew up immersed in the voices, guitars, and traditions of this soulful Portuguese art form. Portugal’s national musical tradition, fado is a deeply expressive music of longing, characterized by warm guitar melodies and evocative lyrics.

Across a career spanning more than two decades, Mariza has embraced that legacy and transformed it into a universal language, honoring the emotional depth of fado while bringing its timeless artistry to audiences around the world. Her unmistakable voice has earned her more than 50 platinum records, multiple Grammy nominations, and numerous international honors. Since her breakthrough album, Fado em Mim (2001), she has sold more than one million recordings and collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists including Sting, Cesária Évora, and Gilberto Gil.
