Born in Mozambique and raised in Mouraria, one of Lisbon’s most historic neighborhoods, Mariza grew up surrounded by the voices, guitars, and traditions of fado. From an early age, she embraced that legacy and transformed it into a universal language, becoming the most acclaimed Portuguese artist in the world.

Inspired by the great names of fado and gifted with a singular voice, she first captivated Lisbon before emerging as an international phenomenon. Today, Mariza appears regularly on the world’s most prestigious stages, from the United States to Asia, Europe, and Latin America, carrying with her the soul and identity of Portugal.

With a career spanning more than two decades, she has earned over 50 platinum records, multiple Grammy nominations, and numerous international awards, establishing herself as one of the defining voices in world music.

More than a performer, Mariza is a cultural ambassador—an artist who has continually evolved while remaining rooted in tradition. Her music bridges past and present, memory and future, honoring fado while expanding its reach and emotional power.

Since her international breakthrough with Fado em Mim (2001), she has sold over a million recordings and collaborated with artists including Sting, Cesária Évora, Gilberto Gil, and Lenny Kravitz.
