Sitar maestro Niladri Kumaar has forged a distinctive musical path, bringing the rich traditions of Indian classical music into conversation with contemporary sounds. A frequent collaborator of the late Ustad Zakir Hussain, a longtime favorite of McCarter audiences, Kumaar pays tribute to his friend and mentor in The Space Between the Notes. The concert celebrates their remarkable musical connection and features excerpts from their final performance together, recorded live in Mumbai before Hussain's passing, alongside Kumaar's original compositions and interpretations.
Performing on sitar and zitar, an electric instrument he developed to explore new possibilities beyond the traditional sitar, Kumaar is joined by an outstanding ensemble: Satyajit Talwalkar, an acclaimed tabla player who has performed with some of India's foremost classical musicians; Agnelo Fernandes, a versatile keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist whose work spans jazz, pop, and electronic music; and Sambit Chatterjee, an accomplished drummer who moves between classical, jazz, and contemporary styles.
Rooted in centuries-old musical traditions yet alive with creative innovation, The Space Between the Notes celebrates Hussain's enduring musical legacy while carrying forward the spirit of a remarkable musical partnership.
